Shortfall in Barnet and Camden Police Budget Revealed

PRESS RELEASE: IMMEDIATE:
SHORTFALL IN BARNET AND CAMDEN’S POLICE BUDGET REVEALED
Andrew Dismore, Labour’s London Assembly candidate for Barnet and Camden has called for a rethink on police cuts as new figures show the two Borough’s police face a £3.289 million shortfall in the current year.
Camden Borough police spent £55,068,918 last year. But figures released by the Metropolitan Police under the Freedom of Information Act reveal their proposed budget for the current year (2011/12) has been reduced to £52,956, 948, a shortfall of £2,111,970.
Barnet Borough police spent £40,273,860 last year. But the Freedom of Information Act figures released by the Met. show their proposed budget for the year (2011/12) has been reduced to £39,096,690, a shortfall of £1,177,170.
Together the two Boroughs in the London Assembly constituency are losing £3,289,140m.

London Assembly candidate for Barnet and Camden Andrew Dismore, demanded that the cuts be reconsidered.
Mr Dismore said:
“I’m deeply worried that slashing our local police will affect their ability to keep us safe and keep us feeling safe. We saw in August how important it is to have police on the streets when trouble hits.
Last week, I was able to release figures I had received under the Freedom of Information Act which showed the two Boroughs had lost 157 officers and PCSOs between them, out of the total cut of 1,314 officers in the Met. as a whole since the Conservative led Coalition Government came to power in May 2010.
Now we see just how tight the cuts to front line policing are squeezing local budgets.
According to Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC), London is set to lose almost 3,000 uniformed officers by 2015 – 1,907 police officers and 902 police community support officers.
Conservative Mayor Boris Johnson and the Tory-led government should take note of the public’s serious concerns about the shortage of police and reverse their police cuts. And GLA member Brian Coleman should stand up for local people on this issue too: so far he has not written to the Met. once, either before or after the riots, questioning police numbers and the cuts.”
