Dismore questions London Mayor over future of Euston Fire Station

During Mayor’s Question Time, Andrew Dismore, Labour London Assembly member for Barnet and Camden, challenged Mayor Boris Johnson over the future of Euston Fire Station, in light of press reports that it was one of 8 London Fire Stations facing closure or merger.(Evening Standard 8/6/12)

In response to Mr Dismore’s questioning, the London Mayor Boris Johnson refused to confirm the future of Euston fire station was secure.

After Questiion Time Mr Dismore said:

“ I was very concerned  to read the press reports of the leak from the fire service and so felt it was my duty as a new memeber of the Fire Authority to question the mayor over the future of the station.

Whilst he said that he wanted to ensure fire safety in London, the Mayor did no explain how that was compatible with a programme of fire station closures or the withdrawal of fire engines.

Euston is an extremely busy fire station and  played a key role in the aftermath of the Lonond 7/7 bombings and the King’s Ctross Fire. It serves three main rail stations, UCL hospital, a number of tube stations, the British  Library and British Museum, and many other key parts of  Camden and central London. There can be no possible justification for any threat to its future on fire safety grounds nor for the Mayor refusing to confirm its future, either.

Suspicious minds might think that there is some hidden agenda around the value for redevelopment of the fire station site so near to Euston station,  should HS2 go ahead.

I shall fight to defend Euston  Fire Station which is so vital to the protection of Londoners and paln to visit it myself on Thursday 21st June at 9am .”
