Mayor’s statement against Antisemitism letter for publication

Dear editor,

I was  pleased  to see that Mayor Boris Johnson  has at last signed the Mayors’  declaration against  anti – Semitism.  But why did it take him so long to do so? I first asked him if he would sign  by bringing it to his attention  in a Mayor’s Question tabled as long ago as  9th November  for  last year’s  18th November Mayor’s Question Time.  As I couldn’t get a straight answer from him, I had to repeat the question  twice – three times in all – at subsequent Question Times, before  he finally got round to doing so, nearly 3 months later.

He may now have other things on his  mind with  his quest for the Conservative Party leadership, but he remains Mayor of London until May and at a time when we have seen a significant rise in anti-Semitic incidents in the capital over the last year, I would have thought that he could have shown a much higher degree of leadership to London than this belated and apparently grudging effort.

Yours sincerely,
