Dismore slams Conservative ‘Hypocrisy’ over North London Business Park scheme

Labour London Assembly Member Andrew Dismore has criticised plans for the redevelopment of North London Business Park, and accused his Conservative Party opponents of hypocrisy in their position on it.

Mr Dismore said:

‘As it happens, I share the concerns over North London Business Park, and have written in to object to them. But it really is beggars belief that the Conservatives oppose this scheme on the basis of the eight storey blocks being too big for the area, but have no problem with creating “Barnhattan” in the south of the borough, where they are building almost two dozen tall buildings. It is sheer hypocrisy.’

‘The local Conservative Councillor has been given numerous opportunities to vote with Labour to oppose the nearby Abbotts Depot scheme. With a Conservative majority of just one on the Council, it is her vote that could have stopped this development, yet she has never voted for her residents. Her current position is merely shedding crocodile tears because of the election in May.’

After speaking to residents on Weirdale Avenue and Ashbourne Avenue, Mr Dismore and local Labour Councillor Andreas Ioannidis said that plans to open access to North London Business Park from there were “totally unacceptable”, as they would make the existing residential roads congested and difficult to park in.

Cllr Ioannidis added that the local infrastructure was not suited to the size of population expected if the development goes ahead. He said:

‘Local bus services are not well interconnected, and the expected population rise will put the existing services under immense strain. As there are no supermarkets nearby, I would expect future residents will drive, and I do not believe there is adequate parking proposed here. Even the pedestrian crossings are small, and not designed for the number of people who will be using them on a daily basis.’
