London Assembly and Fire Authority  Member Andrew Dismore has won the argument in principle that the long-disused cottages at the rear of West Hampstead Fire Station should be brought back into use as key worker housing for firefighters.

The Fire Authority resources committee on 10th March approved Mr Dismore’s proposal to look at the option of key worker rental, as opposed to open market sale.

Visiting the fire station,  Mr Dismore said:

‘These four cottages have been empty for years, and it is high time they were refurbished. As the only access is via the fire station yard, it would be ideal to convert the cottages to provide eight bedsits for rent to firefighters starting on their brigade careers.

‘Sale on the open market would be problematic, as a new access path would be needed, which would be very constraining, there would be no parking available, and for non-Brigade staff, being  so close to the drill yard and fire station would be noisy and inconvenient.

‘This provides an ideal solution for key worker housing and to bringing the cottages back into use. I hope that with a new Mayor, we can get these cottages lived in again.”
