Incorrect Grahame Park Street Signs ‘another example of “bungling Barnet” Council incompetence’ says Dismore

Barnet Council has been slammed by London Assembly Member Andrew Dismore after new street signs in the regenerated Graham Park estate incorrectly display a Brent Council logo.

After seeing the new signs for Percival Road and Lower Strand, Mr Dismore said:

“Are bungling Barnet trying to give Grahame Park a ‘free transfer’ to Brent or is it that they are so incompetent that they can’t even check the right borough is on their street signs? Maybe this explains why people didn’t get their election polling cards too!”

Mr Dismore has also written to Barnet Council’s acting Chief Executive John Hooton with 12 questions:

1)         Who ordered the new signs?

2)         Who manufactured the signs?

3)         Were Capita involved in any part of this?

4)         Who installed the signs?

5)         Who should have been responsible for checking that the signs were correctly designed?

6)         Who should have been responsible for checking that the signs were correct at the point of installation?

7)         Why was it not noticed that signs with Brent Council logos were being installed in Barnet?

8)         How long will it take to rectify the problem?

9)         What will the cost of replacement signs be?

10)      Who will pay for the cost of installing correct signs?

NOTES: Full copy of the letter from Andrew Dismore AM to John Hooton:

Dear Mr Hooton,

You may be aware that newly installed street signs in Grahame Park have the Brent Council logo on them. Just like the recent elections maladministration, this raises serious questions about the culture of checking within the Council. As it is, many residents in Grahame Park feel mistreated by the Council’s “regeneration” schemes; now they will be asking if Barnet Council have made a free transfer offer to Brent!

It seems to me to be another inexplicable example of incompetence from Barnet Council, for which it now has an unfortunate reputation.

I have a number of question to which I would be grateful if you could answer:

  1. Who ordered the new signs?
  2. Who manufactured the signs?
  3. Were Capita involved in any part of this?
  4. Who installed the signs?
  5. Who should have been responsible for checking that the signs were correctly designed?
  6. Who should have been responsible for checking that the signs were correct at the point of installation?
  7. Why was it not noticed that signs with Brent Council logos were being installed in Barnet?
  8. How long will it take to rectify the problem?
  9. What will the cost of replacement signs be?
  10. Who will pay for the cost of installing correct signs?

I look forward to your response to these questions. I am attaching below photographs of the signs.

Yours sincerely,

Andrew Dismore

Labour London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden
