Dismore joins Fire Brigade – for a day

Labour London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden and Fire Authority member Andrew Dismore AM joined London Fire Brigade officers for a day at the Fire Service College in Moreton in Marsh yesterday. (photos below).

Kitted out in full Brigade Personal Protective Equipment including a breathing apparatus set, Mr Dismore observed exercises inside training buildings, in which fires were set to burn at over 300 degrees, with lethal toxic fumes and dense smoke. Mr Dismore was able to witness firefighting tactics at first hand, and also see demonstrated new equipment which is being trialled by the Brigade.

Mr Dismore said:

‘As a member of the Fire Authority and with my long standing association with the fire service in my legal and political careers going back to 1978, it was an excellent opportunity to see at first hand the dangers of fire and fire spread, and the risks our firefighters take on a daily basis to keep us safe, when they go into really hostile environments to rescue people trapped by fire.

‘It also showed me just how effective the protective gear is: the temperatures to which I was exposed were hotter than any domestic cooker can achieve at maximum setting – but the PPE protected me from knowing what it would be like to be a  Sunday roast!‘
