Government announce inflation-busing rail hike

Responding to the announcement that rail fares on will rise by up to 3.6%, Local London Assembly Member, Andrew Dismore AM, said:

“We’ve come to expect the Conservative Government to hike up fares year on year now, but that’s no comfort to my constituents who are paying passengers on Thameslink and Great Northern services. They have to deal with delays, cancellations and generally poor services day in, day out. The Government are adding yet another layer of insult to injury by putting up fares at a time when pay is falling well behind inflation.

“Commuters desperately need the Government to follow the Mayor’s lead by freezing fares and lifting the burden off hard-pressed commuters. If they’re not willing to do that then they should get on with devolving these suburban services to the Mayor and TfL to run, as the promised to do before last year’s London elections, only to renege on their pledge afterwards.”
