Dismore urges Barnet to become Living Wage employer

Labour London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden Andrew Dismore has written to the Leader of Barnet Council Cllr Richard Cornelius to ask the Council to look at becoming an accredited Living Wage Employer.

Mr Dismore said the publication last month of a report by the Living Wage Foundation and Child Poverty Action Group, “Moving to the London Living Wage” showed the importance of raising poverty pay.

Mr Dismore said:

‘We all want to end poverty, and the best way of reducing child poverty, in-work poverty and low pay is for employers to pay the London living Wage. With high inflation, stagnating wages, the shambolic introduction of the Universal Credit and the impact of Brexit, working families need every bit of help they can get. Poorer families are also likely to spend their money locally, so paying the London Living Wage would also be good for local businesses.

‘The public sector should always lead the way. The other part of my constituency, Labour-run Camden are already an accredited London Living Wage employer, and if they can cope with austerity and still put their values into practice, I don’t see why Barnet can’t.’
