Cricklewood waste site branded “wholly unacceptable”

A planning application for a waste management and transfer site in Cricklewood is “wholly unacceptable” according to Labour London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden Andrew Dismore in his letter of objection. The land at the rear of 400 Edgware Road is being sized up for an application to “Use railway land for the transportation of aggregates and non-putrescible waste (construction) by rail”.

Mr Dismore said:

‘Local residents are already deeply angry over the problems caused by the Donoghue waste management site on Claremont Road. This will only make matters much worse. There is far too much dust, noise, pollution and congestion as it is. This new application represents a body blow to the community, who have put up with far more than they should have already.’

Anne Clarke, a local community activist added:

‘An aggregate site is the last thing Cricklewood needs. The Brent Cross/Cricklewood scheme is meant to improve the area, this plan simply does the opposite. This aggregate transfer site was not part of the original plan and should not be considered. It is time to take a step back and revisit the original planning permission as granted.’

Lisa Pate, another local activist agreed, saying:

“Residents of Cricklewood continue to work hard to improve their community. The Railway Terraces are a spectacular example of a community who make the most of their conservation area which sits neatly between the railway and the Broadway. The community understands the historic relationship with the railway but this should never include the addition of a noisy aggregate site next to their homes. Traffic from this site will impact the whole of Cricklewood, a community who already knows what one waste site can do to a community”

Text of Andrew Dismore’s letter of objection below:

Objection to planning application for 400 Cricklewood Railway Yard, Land At Rear Of 400 Edgware Road, Cricklewood NW2 6ND, Ref: 17/5761/EIA

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to object to the above application in my capacity as London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden.

This application is wholly unacceptable. There are enough problems in the area with noise, dust and pollution from the Donoghue’s site without adding to the amount of waste processed in the area. Under no circumstances should concrete batching, cement, or asphalt companies or any other dirty businesses be allowed on the site.

The HGV’s attending the site will cause yet more traffic, congestion, noise and pollution in an area that already suffers from this. This application will therefore make what is a currently unacceptable situation even worse.

This application represents a severe degradation of the quality of life for neighbours, and I therefore ask that the Council reject it.
