Dismore welcomes new tactics by police against moped crime

Labour London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden Andrew Dismore has welcomed news that the Metropolitan Police will be using new tactics to combat moped crime. Police will be using scrambler motorbikes, DNA spray and mobile spikes to help tackle an increasingly prominent and common crime. DNA spray lasts for weeks, and has already been used 4 times, leading to one arrest.

Scrambler bikes will be ridden by highly trained motorcycle officers and will be involved more in setting up ambushes for moped thieves than chasing them through the streets. Mobile spikes can be used in alleyways and rat runs to help catch moped riders, rather than more conventional pursuits.

Mr Dismore said:

‘I have raised the problem of moped crime at the Police and Crime Committee, including directly with the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan himself. This is a serious problem, especially in Camden which has the highest number of moped enabled crimes in London. These new tactics will let criminals know they cannot act with impunity, and that they can be pursued. It will also demonstrate to residents that the Met are taking resident complaints seriously’.
