Anti Trick or Treat leaflets raise complaints

Leaflets distributed by the police on the Grahame Park estate in Colindale have been described as “unnecessarily heavy-handed” by Andrew Dismore, local Labour London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden.

The leaflet carries a large warning saying “Sorry NO Trick or Treat. Trick or Treat causes danger to children, who are often unsupervised; damage to other people’s property; distress, especially to the elderly and the vulnerable.”

Mr Dismore said:

‘The language is heavy-handed. It is unnecessary to discourage Trick or Treating, given most are small children. If they had done a leaflet that had just said “no Trick or Treating here” or similar, that would have been ok. I have written to the mayor of London Sadiq Khan to ask if it would have been better to do a positive leaflet with recommendations for children’s safety, not to cause damage and to respect the elderly, as ‘do’s’ rather than just don’t do it at all?’
