School cuts still set to go ahead in Barnet and Camden

The budget last week provided no addition funding for education, which means millions of pounds are still set to be cut from school budgets in London, according to Labour London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden Andrew Dismore.

The Government’s “fairer funding formula” is set to reduce school funding across the country by £1.4 billion. Barnet will lose £23 million, Camden £8 million per year by 2019. Most schools spend around 2/3 of their budgets on teaching staff, which means it is likely that there will be a significant reduction in classroom support staff.

Mr Dismore said:

‘These cuts are pernicious and wrong. Education expenditure should always rise, as it is an investment in the future. These school cuts will turn the clock back 20 years, and teachers will be left alone in the class without support from teaching assistants. This is especially bad for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).’
