Burnt Oak station to go step-free

Burnt Oak Station is set to become step-free following an announcement by Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London. The Northern Line station was one of 13 stations across London that will be upgraded to allow more accessibility for those with limited mobility by 2022. Labour London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden Andrew Dismore welcomed the news.

This is part of the Mayor’s £200 million plan to achieve the largest boost to step-free access in the Tube’s 155-year history. This will help bring the total number of Underground stations with step-free access to all platforms to more than 100. Investment across TfL will mean that by 2022, 40 per cent of the network will be step-free – a significant increase on the current level of 27 per cent.

Mr Dismore said:

‘This is excellent news for Burnt Oak. Making stations more accessible was one of my key campaign issues, and I am pleased that more residents will be able to use Burnt Oak station. Burnt Oak has been badly neglected by the Conservative Council, and it is good to see a Labour Mayor investing in the local infrastructure.’

Local community activist and Labour Council Candidate Sara Conway said:

‘The stairs at the station are difficult to use, especially for those with prams and push-chairs as well as wheelchairs. I know the local community will be delighted with this news and I hope that the effect of the station being step-free means that more people visit the area, which would be great news for the local shops.’
