Camden wins finding bid to improve air quality near schools

Camden Council have been successful in securing funding from the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan’s ‘Neighbourhoods of the Future’ project. The project will establish a new School Low Emission Neighbourhood in Camden to protect pupils from filthy air.

The proposal will see 8,500 pupils at 23 schools in the Frognal and Fitzjohns area benefit from streets in the vicinity being restricted to electric and local access only, electric vehicle charging points in school car parks and points to power up at lamp posts close to home. The overall cost of the project is £720,000, partly funded by the Council and the GLA.

Labour London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden Andrew Dismore welcomed the news, saying:

‘The Mayor has made it his mission to tackle the toxic air quality in London. Every year far too many London schoolchildren are diagnosed with asthma and other conditions that we could prevent by being stronger on tacking pollution. It shows that a Labour Mayor working with a Labour Council can start to tackle the problems the Conservatives are failing to at a national level.’

Richard Chadwick, a Labour candidate for Frognal and Fitzjohns ward added:

‘I welcome this important project to improve air quality in a neighbourhood where there are a lot of schools. Camden Council understand the importance of improving air quality and I am pleased that they are putting real money into our community to tackle the problem.’
