Camden Town Post Office closure outrage

Plans to close the Crown Post Office in Camden Town and relocate to a new franchise have been branded “outrageous” by Labour London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden Andrew Dismore.

After plans for a new franchised Post Office doors away from the current Crown Post Office were unveiled in February, Mr Dismore wrote to the Post Office as part of their consultation to express his concern that the move would destabilise the current Post Office, leading to its closure. Mr Dismore had said in his original letter that “If your intention is indeed to close the current Crown Post Office, then I do not believe the Post Office are being honest with customers or with me, and that this is not an honest consultation.”

The response received from the Post Office stated that “there is no plan to deliberately undermine the business at the current Camden branch.”

However, the Post Office have now said they plan to close the Crown Post Office and open a new franchise run by Universal Office Enterprise (UK).

Mr Dismore said:

‘This was entirely predictable, but nonetheless disappointing that the assurances received in February aren’t worth the paper they are written on. I have written back to them to point this out, and to ask what services that are currently on offer are  being cut.’
