Barnet Council challenged on failure to be accredited London Living Wage employer

Labour London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden Andrew Dismore has written to the leader of Barnet Council Cllr Richard Cornelius to ask why Barnet Council are not on the list of accredited London Living Wage employers.

In a written question to Sadiq Khan, Mr Dismore asked the Mayor of London whether he could “name the London boroughs which are London Living Wage accredited? Will you meet with the boroughs that are not accredited to tell them the benefits of paying the London Living Wage?”.

The Mayors response was:

“There are currently 16 London Living Wage accredited boroughs: Brent, Camden, Croydon, City of London, Ealing, Enfield, Greenwich, Hackney, Hammersmith and Fulham, Hounslow, Islington, Lambeth, Lewisham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest.

“My officers are working to engage and involve more London boroughs in adopting my Good Work Standard, including the London Living Wage, through London Councils. I will also continue to raise this in my ongoing engagement with boroughs.”

In his letter to Cllr Cornelius, Mr Dismore said:

‘I notice that Barnet are not on the list. Could you let me know why this is, and whether you intend on rectifying this? It would be absolutely scandalous if Barnet were not an accredited living wage employer, when the cost of housing in the borough is so high, and the Council has persistently failed to meet its affordable housing targets. I urge you and the council to consider properly the impact of low pay, and demonstrate your commitment to reducing poverty pay.’
