Response from the police to ASB and speeding concerns on the A406

Thank you for raising your concerns about enforcement of speed and road safety on the A406 in the Finchley area. Excessive speed is one of the key factors in fatal and serious collisions and the MPS roads policing teams lead regular campaigns targeting offending motorists, seeking to change their behaviour. I do want to assure you that this is an absolute priority for us, and we are supported by Transport for London in our daily efforts to target speeding motorists.

It is no secret that since the Covid 19 crisis struck, traffic volumes have reduced and opportunist drivers have taken advantage of the less congested roads to drive at higher speeds. We continue to address this and there has been considerable publicity highlighting the risks, whilst affirming our intent to curb this dangerous, and anti-social trend. We have had notable successes, identifying and prosecuting offenders.

I know the area you are referring to well and I have personally patrolled there in the last week. My team does actively patrol and robustly enforce, always seeking to reduce collisions and casualties, including working with Transport for London to look to maximise camera enforcement along the whole of the north London section of the A406. We target our patrolling resources in this area, and we are making use of the fixed camera system as part of an enforcement campaign. Transport for London is our key partner in ‘Vision Zero’, to eradicate deaths and serious injuries from London’s roads. Transport for London is fully supporting our roads policing campaigns to make London’s roads safer for everyone.
