MQT Answer: Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus adverts on TFL Services
Advertising on Transport for London
Question No: 2090 / 2012
Andrew Dismore
As the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is not recognised by the UK or any other state apart from Turkey do you consider it is appropriate for it to advertise on Transport for London sites and transport and will you ban such advertisements?
Written response from the Mayor
TfL has entered into contractual arrangements with several advertising contractors, which are each responsible for selling commercial advertising space on set portions of TfL’s estate and assets. The contractors operate according to TfL’s published Advertising Policy (available at http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/businessandpartners/tfl-advertising-policy.pdf). Within this, section 3.1 clearly specifies the circumstances where advertising should not be accepted.
Where there is any doubt about a particular campaign, we seek independent advice from the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP). CAP is administered by the Advertising Standards Authority, the UK’s independent regulator of advertising across all media.
HM Government has placed no restrictions on airlines wishing to offer direct flights to the northern region of Cyprus, and where advertisements meet all the other acceptance conditions, TfL has no case to restrict them.
