28-storey tower block will be a “blight”

Barnet Council has approved a scheme to build 1,309 new residential units on the Colindale Sainsbury’s superstore site on The Hyde, including a 28-storey tower block. Labour London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden Andrew Dismore criticised the decision, saying the block was too high and dense.

Mr Dismore has already written to the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan to outline the objections he sent to the council.

Mr Dismore said:

‘It is rare for the Mayor to turn down such applications if the Council has approved them, as the Mayor can only base his decisions on strategic matters. Therefore it is deeply disappointing that the Council has approved such a large development here. They complain about large developments near stations yet approve another huge scheme in a place with poor transport connectivity. Barnet Council does not care about the damage they do in Colindale, or about the lives of people who live there.’

Colindale Labour Councillor Nagus Narenthira said:

‘There is far too much development going on in this part of the borough, without anywhere near enough contribution to local infrastructure. £900,000 for local bus services and £60,000 for a feasibility study at Hendon Central Station will do nothing about the lack of capacity. The Edgware Road is choking in fumes and congestion already, and GP services and local schools are heavily over-subscribed.’
