Letter to the Press: Remembering the fallen

Dear editor,

Congratulations to Mrs. Loveday for her efforts to ensure the fallen of Barnet are properly honoured on war memorials. It is a pity the Council is not being more constructive about the war memorial in Edgware. I have been campaigning for a number of years now, for the names of the fallen from Edgware and Burnt Oak in the Second World War (and subsequent conflicts) to be commemorated on Edgware’s memorial, but the Council have failed to give this issue any attention whatsoever, even though I supplied them with a list of the names of those who had lost their lives for their country on more than one occasion. I tried to raise the issue at the last Hendon Area Forum, but the Chair, Cllr Brian Gordon, ruled it was “out of order” to ask about this, under the Council’s new rules that prevent anything of importance whatsoever being raised. He would also have been embarrassed by being reminded that he promised to deal with issue three years ago, when he was the then chair of the Forum. Let us hope that drawing attention to the issue through your columns (and not for the first time) will shame the Council into acting in time for this year’s Remembrance Day: but somehow I doubt it!

Yours sincerely
