Dismore welcomes Livingstone fares cut pledge

Labour London Assembly candidate for Barnet and Camden Andrew Dismore has welcomed en Livingstone’s announcement that he would cut London’s public transport fares, if elected Mayor.
Andrew Dismore said:
“Ken’s promise to cut fares by 5% from next October if he wins next May’s mayoral election is a very welcome contrast to the ever increasing transport costs we have seen from Boris Johnson. Including next January 2012’s rise, fares under Mayor Johnson will have increased by a mammoth 55% since he came to power in only 2008, building up TfL’s surpluses whilst breaking his pledges on improving services and tube line closures.
At a time when commuting Londoners are feeling the pinch, Ken’s planned 5% reduction, with a freeze the following year and increases no more than inflation for 2014, will be a real boon to Camden and Barnet residents who travel to work.
There can be little doubt that Londoners’ key priorities include the quality of public transport and the fares to travel on it. I challenge GLA member Brian Coleman: does he continue to support Boris Johnson’s planned fare hike of 7% in January2012 on top of his 7% rise this year? Or will he see what Barnet and Camden residents want and back Ken’s policy of cutting fares instead?”
