Boris Johnson fails to secure upgrade of Gospel Oak – Barking train line

Mayor Boris Johnson today came under criticism for failing to secure a good deal for Camden from the government. Yesterday rail improvement schemes across the country were announced, however the electrification of the Gospel Oak – Barking overground line was left out. This is despite Boris Johnson’s manifesto promising to electrify this important line.

During the recent election Mayor Boris Johnson promised to get a good deal for Londoners from the Conservative-led government. However, this much needed improvement work has now not materialised. The current line is served by slower diesel trains, in addition to being less environmentally friendly this means that passengers have to switch trains.

Labour Assembly Member Andrew Dismore said:

“This is a real disappointment; this line urgently needs to be upgraded. During the election campaign the Mayor promised us this would happen, however he has failed to get the investment funds from his Conservative colleagues in central government. I will continue to campaign to secure this much needed investment in our local infrastructure.”
