Labour launch ‘Better Barnet’ campaign

Barnet’s Labour councillors have launched a new website to campaign against the council’s unpopular ‘One Barnet’ programme which plans to gamble £1bn of council tax-payers’ money by selling off 70% of critical council services to two private for-profit companies.

The ‘Better Barnet’ campaign is a resource for the whole community to use to help raise awareness of the risks involved in the ‘One Barnet’ mass privatisation, to support local people in their individual campaigns against ‘One Barnet’, and to help develop ideas for an alternative to ‘One Barnet’.

Local people can use the website to sign the petition calling for a public referendum on ‘One Barnet’, to lobby their elected councillors about ‘One Barnet’ and to share their experiences of Barnet council, and their suggestions for creating a Better Barnet.

Leader of Barnet Labour Group, Cllr Alison Moore said: “’One Barnet’ is such a fundamental change to local services, and a change of such magnitude, that it will touch every single person’s life in the borough, and, so far Barnet residents have not even been formally asked whether they agree with it.

People do not feel that the council is listening to them – we are – and so we wanted to create some real community engagement and a genuine dialogue around ‘One Barnet’ and the alternatives.

This is for everyone to use, and we want as many people as possible to sign-up and get involved. The only way we can stop ‘One Barnet’ and create a Better Barnet is by working together.”
