Victory as Gove U-Turns on languages

MayorsQuestionTime

Andrew Dismore has today welcomed the announcement from the Department for Education that they are to perform a u-turn on enforcing a prescribed list of languages that could be taught in Primary Schools.

Stephen Twigg MP, Labours shadow Education Secretary told the Board of Deputies of British Jews in March that under Labour the plan would be scrapped.

In March, Mr Dismore wrote to Mayor Johnson and Education Secretary Michael Gove to ask the government to reconsider the entire proposal a prescribed list.

Mr Dismore said:

“I am glad that Michael Gove has finally listened to concerns that residents and community groups have raised about this absurd scheme.

To include Latin or Ancient Greek, but exclude working languages like Hebrew or Modern Greek was ill thought through.

This is a victory for all communities who want to preserve their cultures, which have contributed so much to Britain.”
