A High Court judge today found Conservative Barnet Council to have broken the law in increasing parking charges to increase general revenue.

In April 2011 the Conservative administration running Barnet Council increased the cost of CPZ permits from £40 to £100 and the price of a one hour visitor permit from £1 to £4 per day.

The then Labour GLA candidate and now Assembly member for Barnet and Camden, Andrew Dismore AM campaigned vigorously against these increases, highlighting the possible breach in law. Following his election to the London Assembly Mr Dismore continued campaigning against excessive parking charges, highlighting the issue in a London Assembly Economy Committee report into High Streets, which Mr Dismore chaired.

Labour London Assembly Member Andrew Dismore said:

“The Judge, Mrs Justice Lang, has found Conservative Barnet Council once again to have broken the law. Residents knew all along that the increases were a ploy to fill the coffers of the Council, and Mrs Justice Lang has just confirmed it.

Barnet Council now need to come clean, apologise to all residents, reverse the CPZ charges to 2011 levels, and refund residents who have paid over the top – if they do not Barnet Conservatives  will yet again be showing contempt for the people of Barnet.”
