Dismore publishes official figures on impact of fire Cuts on Camden as last ditch court case fails
Andrew Dismore, Labour London Assembly member for Barnet and Cmden has today published official figures from the fire authority showing the impact of fire brigade cuts on Camden residents, after the judical review brought by Labour Councils failed to stop the cuts. Belsize, Clerkenwell and 8 other fire stations across London are now scheduled to close on 9th January.
Mr Dismore said:
“The impact of these damging cuts cannot be underestimated. residents in Belsize fare the worst : they will have to wait for 3 minutes 22 seconds longer for a fire engine, a mere second short of 8 minutes in total, if their home is on fire or they are trapped in a car accident awaiting rescue.
Two weeks ago, when I questioned him in the Assembly, the Fire Commissioner confirmed that those living in high rise blocks would wait 15 minutes or more for fire fighting to begin.
All these cuts are finance driven because the Mayor wants to save a penny a day on the council tax. All the polling shows Londoners do not want these cuts and prefer to pay a fair amount for their fire service but the Mayor has ignored them. He is putting lives at risk for his political dogma. Londoners did not vote for these cuts but he is forcing them through anyway.”
