Stirling Corner: risk to 24/7 lights trial

Andrew Dismore, Labour London Assembly member for Barnet and Camden has learned that the 24/7 traffic lights trial at Stirling Corner is under threat.

Mr Dismore has campaigned for years, on the need for better safety measures at Stirling Corner, and persuaded TfL to trial full time traffic lights last year. The lights have been very successful and widely welcomed by residents who find the junction much safer to use as a result.

TfL extended the trial period for the 24/7 traffic lights for 6 months, to the end of May this year.

However, Mr Dismore has also learned at Barnet Council’s Area Forum, that TfL has told them that monitoring to date suggests that queuing lengths have increased on most approaches to the  junction, and that their customer centre has received mainly negative comments about the trial.

Mr Dismore said:

“This is very worrying, as clearly those who support the change have not told TfL they approve of what has happened and only those who have been inconvenienced have complained. There is therefore a clear risk that the trial may not become permanent, and the lights would go back to the old peak hours settings only, or even stop altogether.

It is vital therefore that if residents support the change, they  tell TfL customer centre accordingly,  to give them their views I if we are to keep the 24/7 lights and make further progress on safety at Stirling Corner.

It is clear that contrary to what was thought by local people, the 24/7 lights are not a done deal and are under threat. TfL must be told of the importance of this safety measure by as many people as possible”.
