Dismore objects to overdevelopment on British Library site

Andrew Dismore. Labour London Assembly member for Barnet and parliamentary candidate for Hendon has today submitted his objections to the plans to develop the British Library site (see attached).

Mr Dismore said:

“Trying to stop the overdevelopment of Colindale under the Conservatives has as much chance of success as King Canute trying to hold back the waves. The Conservatives are as unyielding as the tide, in their desire to cram Colindale to the gills with new residents, but without the infrastructure needed to support them.

Yet again we are seeing proposals for tall buildings, yet no additional transport or health service provision, and in particular inadequate parking arrangements.

Local roads cannot cope, and the council at the least should require the developers to charge no more than a council resident’s parking permit, so they do not profit twice over with extortionate parking charges which the new residents refuse to pay, using neighbouring roads to park instead.

What is deeply worrying is that the developers have not even given an indication of how many of the new homes are to be “affordable” under any definition, relying on commercial confidentiality to keep the details  secret.

The council is letting them get away with this, making a mockery of the whole planning process. This is not transparency; it is an opaque and prejudged decision to imposition of yet more overdevelopment on Colindale”.
