Andrew Dismore, Labour London Assembly member and parliamentary candidate for Hendon addressed the Cyprus rally in  Trafalgar Square on 13th July, to mark the 40th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of 1974.

Speaking in Greek, Mr Dismore said: ( translation)

“ We are meeting after 40 years of illegal occupation, injustice and  struggle for human rights, and after 40 years without a solution.

“Every year, whenever I visit Cyrus,  I can see with my own eyes the situation  of the occupation which prevents Cypriots from returning to their own homes.

“Now, the eyes of the world are elsewhere, on Syria, Iraq and the Middle East, and for this reason we must always remember Cyprus.

“I am not an MP at the moment, but hope to return to parliament, and if I am elected next year, I promise not to forget Cyprus, and will work hard for Cypriots, Cyprus and for a solution.

“The visit of Vice president Biden, and the discussions between president Anastassiades and Mr Eroglu bring new hopes.

“But we want to see real progress. Progress on the return of refugees. Progress on the issue of settlers. Progress towards a solution, a solution that is not a rewritten version of the Annan plan.

“I am convinced that a solution without a united Cyprus, one state and one people, is not a solution.

“Cypriots  are one people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots together.

“ I hope and believe that genuine  Turkish Cypriots also want to win a just, lasting solution in Cyprus.

“They well know that their future is with you, the Greek Cypriots, one Cypriot people in one island.

“ For you, and for them,  the Turkish military forces , all of them, must leave Cyprus.

“After so many years, it is high time for a free and united  Cyprus.

“The Cyprus that is the  right of all Cypriots, and where all the Cypriot people can live without fear and with security.

“Long live justice. Long live freedom. Long live Cyprus.”
