Archway gyratory scheme branded “crackers” after “sham” consultation

A Transport for London (TfL) scheme to remove the Archway gyratory system in Islington has been described as ‘crackers’ and its consultation a ‘sham’ by Andrew Dismore AM, London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden. TfL propose to pedestrianise Highgate Hill between Junction Road and Archway Road, as well as Flowers Mews. The scheme necessitates the relocation of bus stops D and E.

Mr Dismore said:

‘Archway is an important transport hub for residents of Barnet and Camden, who will have to put up with worse traffic and poorer bus connectivity if this goes ahead.’

‘The scheme will increase gridlock by pushing all the traffic through Archway Road. The loss of the two bus stops D and E outside the station is a crackers idea. Together, these bus stops form an important interchange for people coming from Central London and travelling to outer London. Removing these stops will force bus passengers to use busy crossings between bus stops and risk missing connecting buses.

‘TfL’s consultation was a sham and as far as I can see they had already made up their mind, irrespective of what the consultation response showed.  I am not surprised that of the large total of 818 responses, a massive 75% were against the scheme. Yet TfL are ignoring residents’ and commuters’ objections to ram this through. There was clearly little point in consulting when they were not prepared to listen to an answer they didn’t want to hear’.
