Dismore asks Mayor to review proposed minicab drivers’ English language requirements

At today’s London Assembly Budget Plenary, Labour London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden Andrew Dismore AM asked the Mayor to look again at the proposed minicab drivers’ English language requirements, which have become very controversial in the industry. (Video here)

Mr Dismore asked the Mayor:

‘Can I raise TfL’s proposed PHV drivers’ English requirements? Clearly, drivers should be able to communicate in reasonable English, but TfL’s plans for separate tests each cost between £180-200. Will you look at this issue again to see if a driver’s English can be sufficiently assessed by incorporating a language element into the enhanced topographical test?’

The Mayor said that the short answer was “yes”. He had been approached on the fees level and was looking at what level of English was needed.
