A petition with almost 2,765 signatures from has been submitted to the London Assembly calling for the UK to remain in the Single Market despite leaving the European Union (EU). The petition, gathered by community campaigners called on “London’s institutions to fight for the protection of London’s jobs through the continuation of our membership in the Single Market, and preservation of our influence over its rules”.

Andrew Dismore Labour Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden, said:

“Londoners overwhelmingly voted to remain, but the country narrowly voted to leave. Whilst we respect the democratic will of voters, that doesn’t mean remainers forfeit the right to speak or demand the best possible deal. London is the driver of the UK economy, so the best Brexit deal for London is the best Brexit deal for the UK.”

“Access to the single market will allow the UK to trade with Europe without tariffs and keep the free movement of Labour, which is vital to retaining a dynamic economy. Without it we would be dependent on a dodgy deal with Donald Trump. I don’t want to put our jobs, our investment and our public services in his wandering hands.”
