Dismore takes aim at NLBP scheme

The scheme to build over 1300 new properties at North London Business Park has gone to appeal, after being rejected by the Planning Committee on Barnet Council. Labour London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden Andrew Dismore has joined local Labour Councillor Kathy Levine in writing to the planning inspector, urging them to dismiss the appeal.

The site, owned by Comer Homes, is currently occupied by the offices of Barnet Council, and St Andrew’s School. The scheme would see 9-storey buildings built onsite, which neighbours worry would lead to the overlooking of their homes and gardens.

Mr Dismore said:

‘There are just too many things wrong with this application. The design is far too dense, there isn’t anywhere near enough affordable housing and there isn’t enough local infrastructure to cope with such a large scheme. I am especially concerned by any plan to open access via Weirdale Avenue, where there is a locked gate currently, and no access to the site was ever envisaged there. It would lead to huge traffic, parking and congestion problems for Weirdale and Ashbourne Avenues.’

Clement Magoba is a local resident, who lives across the road from the proposed scheme and is a Labour candidate at the Council Elections in May. He said:

‘I live locally, and know this scheme is going to be a huge problem for local people. We have been working with Councillor Kathy Levine to improve pedestrian safety as there is already traffic congestion on Brunswick Park road by North London Business Park during peak hours of the morning and afternoon and this problem will get worse, given the lack of transport infrastructure or local shopping options.’
