Dismore welcomes court decision against coroner: Hassell must resign

Andrew Dismore AM, Labour London Assembly member  for  Barnet and Camden has welcomed the decision  of the High Court, that the protocol  of North Central London Coroner Mary Hassell was  ‘unlawful’; ‘Irrational’ and ‘discriminatory’ in her approach to those who need prompt burials of deceased loved ones , for religious or cultural  reasons.

Mr Dismore said:

‘Yet again Ms Hassell has fallen foul of the law, and for her to be on the receiving end of such a highly critical and trenchant judgment really puts her in her place.

‘It is clear to me that her position is untenable and she should resign forthwith, to make way for a new coroner who understands the needs of our diverse community and approaches those needs sympathetically.

‘The costs of the court case are also going to be high, and whilst a decision on that has yet to be made, it would be outrageous if those costs fall on the public purse of the council tax payers of the boroughs she purports to serve. She should be made to pay the costs of what should have been an unnecessary  court case personally.’
