Budget response from Andrew Dismore AM

In response to the Chancellor’s Budget Announcement, Labour’s London Assembly Economy Spokesperson, Andrew Dismore AM, said:

“Today’s budget will leave Londoners asking when they will actually see the end to austerity that they were promised. Eight years of lost pay growth, and cuts to welfare and public services, have left many in hardship and almost everybody worse off. The Chancellor’s statement leaves unanswered the question of how the Government will really undo that damage.

“There have been missed opportunities to give vital public services here in the capital a helping hand. At a time when violent crime is a huge concern for all Londoners, adequate funding for the Met and youth services ought to have been a priority. Tackling our toxic air and our housing crisis needs focused attention that just isn’t there.

“With the threat of a no deal or a bad deal Brexit looming, this statement did nothing to address the economic uncertainty perpetuated by the flawed negotiations with Brussels. We now need to see the Chancellor coming forward with more robust measures to protect jobs, services, and living standards.”
