New Fire Cadet branches for Barnet and Camden welcomed

Labour London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden Andrew Dismore has praised the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan for investing over £1 million in ensuring there are Fire Cadet branches in every London borough, including Barnet and Camden. There are already over 200 Fire Cadets in 15 branches across London, with the new funding providing places for 300 more.

Fire Cadets take part in a range of activities such as fire safety, basic first aid and firefighting skills, a programme aimed at improving their confidence, wellbeing, communication and employability skills. Each cadet also has the opportunity to obtain formal qualifications for completing the programme. So far 750 cadets graduated from the scheme, and 50 have joined the Brigade as professional firefighters.

Mr Dismore, who is a member of the Fire Resilience and Emergency Planning Committee on the London Assembly, said:

‘I am pleased that the Mayor has decided to enact Labour members’ proposals for an expanded cadet force across London. Not only will this provide a potential pipeline for the next generation of trained firefighters, but also gives important extra-curricular activities and skills for young people, who have been left with little support thanks to the Conservative Government’s failed austerity agenda.’
