Planned closure of the Victoria Line from 23rd to 25th May will accommodate rail grinding

I am writing to let you know that from Saturday 23 May to Monday 25 May there will be a full-line closure of the Victoria line. There are no other planned closures on the London Underground network during this weekend.

These closures are required in order to deliver critical safety works at Brixton, where we will be carrying out a full replacement of a track crossing. We will also carry out rail grinding throughout the Victoria line. Rail grinding reduces rail roughness, which we hope will reduce the noise disturbance that some local residents have experienced.
These works have been assessed to ensure they can be carried out safely while maintaining social distancing requirements. In cases where social distancing cannot be maintained, personal protective equipment will be issued, in line with current guidance. I can confirm that grinding work will take place on track between Oxford Circus and Warren Street. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, our ongoing noise measuring programme is currently suspended. However, when the programme resumes, we will carry out noise measurements at local properties, to assess the impact of these works.

Our services are for people making absolutely essential journeys, and we appreciate that these works will have an impact on our customers. We will be encouraging customers making essential journeys to use the following alternatives:

. London Overground between Walthamstow Central, Seven Sisters and Liverpool Street
. London Overground between Walthamstow Queen’s Road, South Tottenham, Harringay Green Lanes and Upper Holloway (from which customers can transfer to the Northern line at Archway)
. Greater Anglia services between Tottenham Hale and Liverpool Street
. Thameslink or Great Northern services between Finsbury Park and central London
. South Western Railway services between Vauxhall and Waterloo
. The Northern line from Stockwell, and the Piccadilly line from Finsbury Park

In addition, rail replacement buses will run between Walthamstow Central and Finsbury Park. Bus route 2, between Brixton and Victoria, will also run an enhanced frequency.
The University College London Hospital at Warren Street will continue to be served by the Northern line, and the Hammersmith & City, Circle and Metropolitan lines at Euston Square.

We have a comprehensive suite of information to make sure that customers are aware of the impact on their journeys. This includes:

. Customer emails
. Posters and PA messages at key stations
. Notification in the Metro Travel page
. Updated Journey Planner which will show alternative travel options
