Update from TfL on Finchley Central tube noise

We are aware of the concerns of residents in the vicinity of the Northern line track between Finchley Central and West Finchley. In June, we carried out grinding work on this stretch of track; this smooths down the top surface of the rails to help keep them in good condition. As this is a tight curve the wheels are slowly wearing the rail back into a comfortable equilibrium (bedding in), which is causing the noise. Once the equilibrium is reached, we expect that the noise will reduce.

We will take further measurements in this area in this month to assess the impact of recent works. We are also considering the replacement of the current mechanical trackside lubricators in this area with electrical lubricators, which are more reliable and efficient in applying the lubricant.
