Government bailout deal is unacceptable

In response to reports that the Government’s TfL emergency funding package will increase fares, expand the congestion charge zone, and reduce concessions, local London Assembly Member, Andrew Dismore AM, said:

“If these reports are accurate and the Government moves ahead with this deal, it falls far short of what our transport services need and what Londoners deserve.

“The refusal of Ministers to offer a long-term and sustainable funding package for TfL amounts to cynical political game playing at the expense of businesses and people’s livelihoods.

“We will all pay a high price for this as key infrastructure projects, vital to London’s and the whole country’s economic recovery, will be thrown into prolonged uncertainty.

“Ordinary Londoners are now looking at fare hikes, and the worst possible time. The scrapping of free travel and concessions for children and older people will hit the most vulnerable the hardest.

“We will continue to fight against the unfair funding conditions imposed upon TfL and call out the Government’s mythmaking about the management of its finances.”
