London in Tier 3 – here’s what you need to know

From the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan:

Dear Londoner,

The Government has announced that London will be moved to Tier 3 from tomorrow – Wednesday 16 December.

Despite our best efforts, the latest COVID-19 figures are showing the virus accelerating in the wrong direction across London and the lives of Londoners are at risk.

It would be a tragedy to lose even more people to this disease now that the vaccine has finally arrived. Here’s what you need to know immediately:

  • Meeting others: You can meet as a group of six people in some outdoor public places such as parks, but should not mix with people outside your household or support bubble anywhere else. This includes in your home and garden.
  • Hospitality venues: Bars, pubs, cafes, restaurants and social clubs must close except for deliveries and takeaways.
  • Businesses and leisure: You can visit shops, indoor leisure facilities, hairdressers, barbers, beauty salons and places of worship, but you can’t mix with people outside of your household or support bubble. Indoor cinemas, theatres and other entertainment venues must close.
  • Getting around: You should continue working from home if you can and avoid travelling into or out of a Tier 3 area, unless it is for an essential purpose such as education, work or hospital appointments. You should aim to reduce the number of journeys you make and walk or cycle wherever you can.

We’ve added the full guidance on our website so Londoners can get all the information they need about Tier 3. Please, read them carefully and follow the new rules:

Here’s what you need to know about Tier 3

As always, please make sure you continue to adhere to social distancing rules, wash your hands frequently, carry hand sanitiser and wear your face mask in public spaces.

Together, we can save as many lives as possible, support our NHS and protect our businesses.

Stay safe, and remember – this isn’t forever. We will overcome this, together.

Thank you,

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan
